As part of our dementia care therapy in Essex, residents at Ardtully are supported to take part in various dementia-friendly activities that reflect their interests and current abilities. Some sessions are more hands-on or social, while others are quieter, depending on what feels right for them on the day.

This dementia care support is suitable for residents living with early-stage dementia as well as those with more advanced Alzheimer’s. Activities and therapies are overseen by professional team members trained in dementia care, with many years of experience supporting residents through memory loss and cognitive changes as they progress.

Supporting Life at Our Dementia’s Care Home

Everyday life for our residents with dementia is as familiar as possible. Activities are adjusted as needs change, without disrupting what they are already used to.

Cognitive & Therapeutic Sessions

Mentally stimulating activities take place throughout the day and are changed depending on how our residents are feeling. Music is often used during quieter periods, either played in the background or shared in small groups.

Staff run reminiscence sessions based around photos, personal items and familiar topics. Memorable moments gently encourage recognition and conversation. Our creative activities for dementia are always simple and practical, allowing residents to concentrate without pressure.

When a quieter setting is needed, our residents can spend time in calmer rooms with lower lighting and sensory items. One-to-one time is also part of daily life, whether that’s looking through personal pictures or sitting with carers and visitors in a quieter part of the home.

Social Engagement & Community Interaction

Social interactions at Ardtully happen naturally through shared spaces, including the dining area, gardens and lounges. Residents spend time together talking over tea or walking outdoors in the fresh air.

Group activities such as quizzes or bingo are available on certain days. Outings to local cafes, garden centres and nearby villages are arranged and residents with dementia are always included if they are able to. Seasonal events and family visits are part of Ardtully’s calendar and take place regularly throughout the year.

Taking part is always optional. Residents can step away at any point or choose not to join in.

Physical Wellbeing & Movement

Movement is part of daily life, with residents walking around the home, spending time outdoors in the secure garden and moving between different areas during the day.

Seated movement sessions are also available for any resident who prefers structured activity. Staff also support movement during everyday tasks, such as walking to meals or spending time outside. Where balance or mobility needs closer supervision, trained staff provide support using safe handling techniques.

Personalised Daily Routines

Daily routines at Ardtully are established on long-standing habits, meaning that mealtimes, rest periods and familiar daily dementia activities are kept consistent.

These practices are part of our dementia care therapy in Essex. Familiar faces, predictable routines and known surroundings allow residents to move through their day without unnecessary disruption.

A Personal Approach to Dementia Activities

Alzheimer Care Support - Essex Care Home - Ardtully Care Home

At Ardtully, we plan dementia activities with the understanding that needs change over time.

What works well now might need some adjustments in the future, so our team regularly reviews each resident’s care plan to make sure that it meets their current needs. As dementia progresses, we’ll adapt dementia activities accordingly, introducing changes gradually and discussing them with families to make sure everyone is on board. This method allows our residents to stay fully engaged in their lives without experiencing sudden disruptions to their routines, which can cause distress for those with dementia.

All activities and therapies are carried out by staff trained in dementia care, with experience supporting our residents as their memory and thinking change over time.
